 Rating 5   I love Tracy's book's
Being new to perennial gardening I have bought many magazines and books on perennials but found that Tracy's book The Well Tended Perennial Garden and The Well Designed Mixed Garden have saved me!! My love for perennials have grown stronger after reading her book's! I have only been working on my gardens for about 4 years and they continue to get bigger each year but now with Tracy's books I have lost a lot less plants and my garden looks better than ever!!

Rating 4   The Well-Designed Mixed Garden
Having read and reviewed a multitude of gardening books, I am always happy to see a new offering with large dimensions; DiSabato-Aust begins her book with philosophical musings on why mixed gardens linger in one's memory, being multi-sensory and creative. The authoress defines a mixed garden as a combination of herbaceous (soft stemmed) plants and the more woody material. Though color plays a large part, DiSabato-Aust does not stop there but explores the importance of shape, size, texture and compatibility to provide an overall complementary tone to one's garden.

After viewing the many photographs included, it is quite apparent that this particular designer is singularly talented in choosing the right plant for the right place; the before-and-after snapshots of her work showcase dramatic improvements. For the homeowner with less planning time, the writer came up with several suggested combinations that have proved themselves viable and visually stunning. The plants described are largely ornamental, however; as a backyard vegetable garden enthusiast, I would have liked to see more "edibles" mixed in with the pretty shrubs and flowers. Included in the book is a sizable appendix of types, zones and growth heights, along with a unique plant list sorted by color and another list of textures, which any garden-planner will vastly appreciate.

Rating 5   Excellent reference book for serious plant lovers
This book is packed with good info. The size may seem intimidating at first, but if you take the time to read through it, you will be rewarded if you're looking for good design instruction with an artistic flair and ideas to make your landscaping unique. My only complaint in the beginning, and it's minor, was that the author regularly uses only the latin names for the plants, so if you're looking for info on a particular plant and you know only the common name, it may take some extra time to find it in the book. However, I have now learned the latin names of many plants I didn't know before. Great book for beginner, novice or beyond, if you're serious about good landscaping with perennials.

Rating 5   So good but so much
The book is everything it promises to be - and more. So much more that it's a little overwhelming. It's a reference book of virtually academic proportions, in the form of a beautiful coffee table book. What makes that challenging is that for people who read predominately on the go, it is large and heavy, so not easily transported. Plus, it is not an at-a-glance type guide, one really has to commit to reading through it. The hardest thing for me is that the types of plants, shrubs and trees that are recommended are not illustrated - even by an outline as to shape, so one has to check further on each suggestion unless one already has an extensive repertoire of knowledge about each type of plant.

 Rating 5   A Flower Gardener's Companion
Comprehensive and very user friendly. A book every home flower gardner would want to have.
